How to choose a nicotine pouch strength

Pick up two cans from different brands and you will notice the strength is written differently, sometimes as a number, sometimes as words like “regular” or “strong”. It is worth spending a minute on this before you order, because the wrong strength is the most common reason people dislike a pouch.

Reading the number

The figure on the can is the amount of nicotine in each pouch, in milligrams. Strengths on the market start at around 2 mg and go well past 10 mg. Two pouches with the same number can still feel different, because the pouch size, the moisture and the brand’s recipe all change how fast the nicotine comes through.

Where to start

If you are new to pouches, begin at the low end of whatever brand you choose. If you already use a fair amount of nicotine, you will probably want something mid-range, but even then it is easier to go up a step later than to put up with a pouch that is too strong. Try one, give it a few minutes, and only then decide whether you want another.

Signs a pouch is too strong

Dizziness, nausea, hiccups, a racing heartbeat or a burning feeling in the mouth all mean the same thing: take the pouch out, rinse your mouth with water and sit down for a bit. If you still feel unwell after that, speak to a doctor. Next time, go down a strength.

Slim or regular?

Slim pouches are smaller and sit flatter under the lip. Some people prefer them for comfort, and they tend to feel a little milder at the same number. Regular pouches hold more filling and are easier to feel. Neither is better, it comes down to what you like.

Flavour matters too

Mint and menthol flavours can feel stronger than they are because of the cooling effect, while sweeter flavours often feel softer. If a brand has two flavours at the same strength, do not be surprised if they feel different.
